Haunts are classified into 3 different groups; one of them is Intelligent Haunts. An Intelligent Haunts is a spirit/ghost that we are able to communicate with and they can communicate back. These spirits are trying to convey a message or answer questions that we pose on them to give us the answers through our EVP sessions. EVPs are Electronic Voice Phenomena that is captured on a recording device, i.e., digital recorder, video recorder or analog tape recorders. These are sounds that is not picked up by human ears while in the haunted environment, but recorded strictly on a device.
If the sound is coming from the room and you can hear the sound, likewise the people around you, then that is called a disembodied voice or sound. I recently was on a ghost hunt with Robb Demerest from Ghost Hunters International at Ybor’s Cuban Club in Tampa (Ybor City), Florida and we got some very good disembodied voices in the Theatre of the club. Sounds of children laughing, a woman’s moan or cry, and the sound of man’s growling were all heard by Robb, me and my SEFGR group. These are different in quality which can be picked up upon listening it back from a recording device. These sound echo and bounce off the walls of the haunted area. EVPs don’t do this because the sound had nothing to bounce off of and seemed to be placed on the device without people hearing it being done.
There are other ways spirits can communicate with us during an investigation. The use of K2 devices, which measures the amount of EMFs in the area, it can also be used as a communication device. The spirit can be instructed to come around the device and by the using the strength upon the device to give yes or no answers.
In example: no lights=no turn lights on=yes
Dousing rods can be used in the same manner.
Crossed=yes Uncrossed=no Separate=I don’t know.
One thing I want to bring up is Ouija boards. I do not condone Ouija boards because of the misuse of the item. Ceremonies and certain rule must be attained to even though sold as a game at your local ToysRUs. Most of time, when somebody gets a Ouija board they open it up, grab the Ouija planchette (pointing device that glides on the board), through it on the board and start to ask questions. This is just bad, bad, bad, and bad. (Slap on hand) You are opening a portal to a different vibration to let the spirit world come and talk to you through the Ouija. If you are unaware of you opening a door, are you still aware when it comes to closing that doorway? No. The ending of an Ouija board session is when everyone gets too scared or too bored. Remember, you cannot make appointments with ghosts. Only a trained psychic or a person who doesn’t mind having a few low level spirits hanging around should use a Ouija Board.
Of course the ultimate is a two way device that would give answers right away, which several have laid claim on making this RTCD (Real Time Communication Device). Ghost boxes are the latest device to be used in by some investigators. I have to admit to making one out of a Radio Shack Scan Radio and have gotten some scary situations. Skepticism come to play, “Did I hear what I wanted to hear or was that just a random scan through the radio waves I’m hearing?”, is the game my mind plays upon this device. Only the future can tell where the next device will come from.

As we learn more about Intelligent Haunts and the ghosts we are dealing with may or may not help those who are our clients. If labeled “Intelligent Haunt”, at least we may have a way for getting the ghost to leave or set some ground rules.
